Where to Find Senior Citizen Discounts in Texas

We love our senior citizens in Texas! During National Senior Citizens Day, we want our beloved population of elderly folks to find out where they can find the best discounts in our great state. Being on a fixed income doesn’t mean having to forego fun outings, or not purchase a few new items here and there.

More times than not, all you need to do is ask at any establishment if they offer a senior citizen discount, and you’ll know right away. You can also ask if they offer retired military or first responder discounts, as many businesses are also honoring those citizens with discounts, too.

From entertainment to clothing stores, we share our tips on where you can find the best bargains without stretching beyond your comfortable financial limits.

Joining the AARP

The AARP, which stands for the American Association of Retired Persons, is a membership-based organization that costs approximately $16 a year and will give you discounts at a slew of major retailers and popular restaurants.

The organization is open to anyone aged 50 years and older, and yearly membership includes your partner or spouse!

Benefits from the membership can be used on health products such as eye wear and dental insurance, benefits when buying a car with AARP’s auto buying program, discounts on car rentals, everyday shopping, and more.

Movie Theaters

The screens are huge and the sound is grand. This is how movies were meant to be seen! But don’t let the cost of going to see a movie discourage you.

AMC Movie Theaters, one of the largest chains in Texas, offers up to a 30% savings on regular adult admission. Most locations have even greater discounts on Tuesdays, with 60% off a regular adult ticket price.

This applies to folks aged 60 and older.

Golf Courses

If you have taken up golf in your later years, then be sure to call the course where you intend to play to find out what their discounts are. Private country clubs offer a discounted annual membership, and courses that don’t require membership will also offer a discount for a round of golf.

If you need to hire gear, ask about discounts on those, too.

While many gyms across Texas are offering exercise classes for our seniors, the YMCA, with locations all across our state, offer AOA (Active Older Adults) and the Silver Sneakers programs to accommodate a wide variety of interests and abilities of today’s active adults 55 and older.

Many locations offer a pool which is great for those suffering with aches and injuries, and you can also find a personal trainer who can work with you to tailor your exercise regiment as best suits you.

The YMCA does offer a discounted membership for seniors 65 years of age and older, and the other benefit is that there are no long-term contracts.

Food Chain Discounts

Check with your favorite local diner to see if they offer great deals on a certain day of the week, or whether coming in early can get you discounted appetizers and mains.

For AARP members, the list of discounts for eating out at major chair restaurants is generous!

Denny’s offers a 15% discount for all AARP members, and members can also receive 10% off from the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. Members will also receive 10% off their check at Carrabba’s Italian Grill by showing their AARP card, as well as 10% off all food and non-alcoholic drinks from Landry’s Seafood, and it’s affiliated restaurants.

Clothing Retail Discounts

A fixed budget doesn’t mean you can’t look sharp! Depending on the day of the week, most Goodwills offer a discount one day of the week. Check your local thrift store to find out which day is the discount.

You can also receive 15% off at Kohl’s on Wednesdays, and 10% off Michael’s every day. Talk to a store representative wherever you go, to see whether senior discounts will apply. It’s often difficult to find these discounts on corporate websites, so it never hurts to ask.

Museum Discounts

Texas’ major cities each have their share of science, children’s, history and art museums. In Houston, for example, you can find a list here that offers discounts to our senior citizens.

Dallas museums also offer seniors a discount, including the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Center, the Nasher Sculpture Center, and Dallas World Aquarium.

Before visiting, check their websites for discount offers. You can also take advantage of free days altogether, such as the free Thursday’s at Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts. As this is not just for seniors. Make a day of it and bring along friends and family. They also stay open late on these nights.
