Shop and Save with Our Six Tips for Texas Tax-Free Weekend

Can you believe it’s almost back-to-school time already? Kids around the state have just under a month left to enjoy their summer days of swimming, TV, and relaxation before they get back to school, homework, and after school activities.

With back-to-school approaching, the Texas Tax-Free Weekend is just around the corner! While there are great deals along with zero state sales tax, the chaos that ensues this weekend can outweigh the benefits of the discounts. Thankfully, these six tips will come in handy to help you to take advantage of the tax-free deals.

1) Make a List

Heading out for tax-free weekend shopping without an idea of what you need can be costly, and it can make your outing overwhelming as well. By creating a list of items to purchase, it will keep you organized and focused on the mission at hand rather than getting off task with looking or buying other items.

2) Confirm the Items on Your List are Exempt

Items on the tax exempt list vary from state to state, so it’s important to make sure your items are on the Texas tax exempt list before heading out. In short, items subject to tax exemptions are clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks – as long as these items are priced under $100. These exemptions apply to items purchased in the store, online, by mail, by telephone, or put on lay-away.

3) Compare Prices Among Retailers

Prior to the tax-free weekend, do some research and compare prices between retailers to find who’s offering the lowest price. Also, be sure to check for coupons or any other deals to take advantage of in addition to the 8.25% you are saving in state sales tax.

4) The Early Bird Does Get the Worm

A day or two before, check to see when stores open, which ones might open early, and if there are any “early bird” hours offered for that particular weekend. By arriving early, you’ll hopefully cut down on lines and the sheer chaos that comes with large crowds of people.

5) Shop Online

Since Texas’ tax-free weekend applies to items purchased in the store AND online, skip the craziness in stores and shop from the comfort of your own home. Just be sure to check your retailers’ websites ahead of time to see if your items are offered online too. In addition, look for stores that are offering free shipping for further savings.

6) Hydrate!

As we’ve learned over these past weeks, it’s hot in Texas, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout your day(s) of shopping. After all, you wouldn’t want all of your tax savings going towards a hospital bill.
