What Do I Buy and When? – September

Welcome to “What Do I Buy and When?” – our monthly series geared towards helping you make smarter buying decisions. Each month, you’ll learn which items retailers price to sell and which ones aren’t so you can find the best deals throughout the year. Our information is gathered from sites like DealNews and DailyFinance, places that search the retail world to find the best and worst deals. We want to help you save money!

September marks the arrival of fall (though you can’t always tell in Texas), and it’s the last month you can find back-to school deals, which means there’s still plenty of shopping you can do this month without breaking the bank.

Texans get to dress like this for about one month out of the year.

Check out our list of what you should – and should not – buy this month!

Good Buys

Older generation iPhones

This represents barely 15 years of cellular phone technology.

The newest generation of iPhone, the iPhone 7, will be released on September 16, 2016. And for those who are budget-savvy, the release of any new bit of technology leads to some steep deals on older generations to clear out the inventory. Currently, Best Buy is offering $150 off most of their iPhone 6 inventory.

32″ 1080p HDTVs

Though Black Friday is thought to be the best time to purchase a new television, September is actually the best time to purchase a 32” 1080p HDTV. With kids heading off to college, units of this relative size are popular for college dorms and/or first-time apartments, making this the perfect time to purchase a good television if you need something modest.

Let’s be honest – Do you really think all of your family’s vacation gear will really fit in that tiny red hatchback?

The month of September is a great time to purchase a car. Next year’s models start rolling out later in the month, which puts pressure on dealerships to move out their current year’s inventory. If you’re in the market for a new car, you should expect to see all types of deals to entice buyers, ranging from financing and purchasing deals to money back.

Bad Buys

If you missed out on the Labor Day sales on appliances, we’d recommend holding off for a couple more months (unless your current model is truly broken). While there were some good deals available, Black Friday will bring the best prices of the year. Waiting just a few more months to purchase an appliance could result in savings up to 75%.

Diamond jewelry

You better make sure the love of your life REALLY wants that cut of diamond before you go into debt over jewelry.

Jewelers typically restock their diamond inventory in October, making September a subpar month to purchase diamonds if you want to see any real savings. The inventory is low, and deals are few and far between. We recommend holding off on a diamond purchase until at least the second week of November, as jewelers will have plenty of inventory and will be looking to make deals because of the holiday shopping season.
