Energy Savings in the Bathroom

Get Your Body (and Energy Bill) Clean

This one is pretty simple – turn off the lights and water when you’re not using them – but let’s explore this in a bit more detail.

Install Energy-Saving Light Bulbs

  • Buy an energy-efficient night light!
  • Transition all the light bulbs in the room to compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs.
  • CFL and LED bulbs can last up to 10-25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs, which means you could save between $30-$80 on your energy
  • According to gov, “CFLs use about 70% less energy than incandescent bulbs.”
  • According to gov, “Residential LEDs — especially ENERGY STAR rated products — use at least 75% less energy, and last 25 times longer, than incandescent lighting.”

Beauty Products

Hair dryers, curling irons, and hot rollers use more electricity than you might think. Blow dryers use between 800 to 1,800 watts, depending on the heat setting.

  • The secret to saving electricity with hair-styling devices is to use them for shorter periods of time.
  • Minimize your warm-up time for curling irons and hot rollers and turn them off as soon as you’re done using them.
  • Use lower heat settings in general.
  • Let your hair air-dry – You’re beautiful!

Hot Water

Electric water heaters account for around 18% of a family’s energy consumption, according to the Department of Energy. So, even if it’s not located in your bathroom, you use lots of hot water there. The goal: use less water.

  • Repair all leaky faucets.
  • A five-minute shower using a flow restrictor in the showerhead uses less hot water and energy than a bath. These days, modern water saving showerheads have water pressure as good as the less eco-friendly models.
  • To save energy, don’t set water heaters above 120° F.
  • Collect the water that flows while you’re adjusting your shower temperature and use it for watering plants – or to wipe down that toilet seat!
